"Sweeping Summit Science"

with Christa Homenick (Ph.D.), National Research Council

Friday Oct 21    6:30 PM

St. Catharines Golf & Country Club

What happened at the Sweeping Summit last May? Hear how science met sport to successfully settle the "sweeping" questions.

Can broom heads really affect the ice surface?  Does directional sweeping really change the trajectory of the stone?  These are just some of the "sweeping questions" explored at the Sweeping Summit in Ottawa last May.  There to do the scientific testing was our speaker, Christa Homenick, Ph.D. and her colleagues from Canada's National Research Council on behalf of the World Curling Federation (WCF).  Using state-of-the-art technologies and working with experts from across the globe, Christa helped design and implement tests on brooms and sweeping like never before. Thanks to her testing and the input of the international curling community, the WCF will announce new sweeping regulations in September 2016.

We are thrilled to welcome Christa Homenick to our ROCKTalks speakers lineup this season.  Christa's energy and enthusiasm for science and testing in sport is as engaging as her talent as a speaker.  Christa Homenick (Ph.D.), a researcher at the National Research Council of Canada, develops advanced engineered materials for defence and security applications. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Christa completed her B.Sc.H. at Brandon University prior to completing a Ph.D. at McMaster University (Hamilton) and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Western Ontario (London) in Chemistry.  She is a founding member of Women in Science and Engineering Initiative (WISE Initiative) at McMaster University, and is passionate about promoting and increasing the profile of women in science.  OCCEndorsementlogo.jpg
